Hey everyone, this is The_SynchroGuy, and I am here to do another “If they played Yu-Gi-Oh!” post. For this one, this one was requested by a friend of mine as it was their birthday yesterday, so to my friend: hope you enjoy your gift, and happy, late, birthday!

For his request, he wanted me to make this type of post around one of his favorite anime shows, “Fairy Tail”!

user uploaded image

This show is a magical world where many people, known as wizards, can cast many different kinds of magic. And just like any magical world, there are also magical creatures that exist in it, as well as some bad wizards that like to cause harm to the world, from time to time. In this world, wizards can make a living by doing some jobs that are pretty simple, or extremely hard. But one of the first things a wizard must do to get access to these types of jobs is to join a guild. And in this world, there is no better wizard guild that you can join than Fairy Tail!

Luckily, for my friend, I too have seen this show, from the beginning to the end, so I already have a good understanding of some of these characters. With so many seasons this show has had, there are a lot of characters I could talk about. However, I’m just going to focus on some of the main characters from the show. In other words: only on some of the members of the Fairy Tail guild.

For some of the characters I’m going to be mentioning, figuring out their decks was pretty easy. Others required a bit of thinking, and a few had my head going back and forth because I couldn’t decide which archetype fits better with who. But, I’m well past the part and am ready to present to you this post. Without further ado, let’s get into this!

Natsu Dragneel

user uploaded image

Natsu is, funny enough, a bit of a hot headed person. He’s always excited to take on powerful opponents, and is up to do any kind of job. However, he sometimes overestimates his own strength. And that, in turn, can sometimes lead to him falling to whatever kind of trap his opponent laid out for him. Still though, his strength is still nothing to scoff at, and when it comes to protecting his friends and/or his fellow guild members, you can bet that a fire will be stirring up in his belly, which in turn will KO the bad guys.

Natsu’s magic is fire magic. But not just any fire magic. More precisely, it’s a type of Dragon Slaying magic. As the name implies, this kind of magic is capable of slaying dragons. Not only that, but it also means that any other types of fire magic that gets used against Natsu won’t work. Because he can, literally, just eat it up.

user uploaded image

He learned this type of magic from a dragon called Igneel (who was like a father figure to Natsu).

user uploaded image

One day though, Igneel disappeared without a trace. Natsu then began searching for Igneel, which eventually led him to the Fairy Tail guild. He then joins the guild in hopes that by going out to take on some jobs, he can possibly find a clue that can lead him to Igneel.

For Natsu’s deck of choice, I’ve decided to give him…

Laval

user uploaded image

Now I know Laval is not exactly one of the greatest decks to exist, so I could’ve given him something like Salamangreat instead, but I didn’t feel like that just fits with Natsu’s personality or style. Not to mention, since he is a dragon slayer, I wanted something that could represent a dragon. And wouldn’t you know it, Laval has a couple of Dragon Synchro Monsters.

Not only that, but since Laval is a bit of a more Synchro focused deck, this gives Natsu access to cards like Crystal Wing, and even a Cosmic Blazar Dragon (yes, Laval can summon out a Blazar Dragon in one turn)! Oh, and one of Natsu’s aliases is “Salamander”. And wouldn’t you know it, there is a monster in this archetype called “Lavalval Salamander”, which is also a Dragon monster. So yeah, I think this archetype fits very well with Natsu.

Lucy Heartfilia

user uploaded image

Lucy here is a little bit of an opposite to some of her fellow guild members. She is not a fan of taking on hard jobs, and prefers doing ones that are easier to do. And she’s not excited to fight strong people, nor does she always want to pick a fight with someone. Lucy is also very nice and caring, and very smart on top of that. She even plans to write her own book one day.

When it comes to comparing her to one of her Fairy Tail guild members, you can say she’s the more “sensible” one. Still though, like all of her fellow members, she will help protect those she cares about. Despite not being a fan of violence, she will fight if she has to, and won’t give up until the bitter end. And let me tell you, she can be very strong, so do not underestimate her.

Her type of magic is “Celestial Spirit Magic”. She has the power to call forth spirit monsters from the spirit world by using special magical keys that can summon them. With these spirits, they can offer Lucy a hand in doing some tough jobs, or when dealing with strong opponents. While there are some strong spirits out there, Lucy possesses a couple of special golden keys, which can summon one of the “Ecliptic Zodiacs”.

user uploaded image

These spirits are, just about, the strongest spirit monsters that exist. So yeah, think twice before you decide to pick a fight with this girl.

Anyway, with all of that information, I decided that her deck would be…

Zoodiac

user uploaded image

Now before you say anything, yes, I know the Zoodiacs are based off of the Chinese zodiacs and not the original zodiacs, but the only archetype we have that is close to the original is the Constellar archetype. I wanted to go with something that fits a bit more to the type of spirits that Lucy uses, so Zoodiacs was the closest thing I could think of. I also thought about giving her a deck of actual Spirit monsters, but other than Shinobirds, there’s no Spirit deck that really sticks out that can fit the bill for Lucy.

Also, in all honesty, if you look at the Zoodiac archetype and then look at the Ecliptic Zodiac group, they look pretty darn similar. Design-wise that is. Some of them are pretty humanoid, while still displaying their animal/creature-like features, and others are just their designed animal/creature that can just stand on two legs. Again, I know they’re not the exact same, but this is still pretty close to the original group. And since Lucy summons members of the Ecliptic Zodiac group a lot, I think Zoodiacs perfectly fit the bill for her.

Gray Fullbuster

user uploaded image

Gray is like the exact opposite of Natsu. He is calm, cool, collected, and the ladies just love him for it, despite him not being that much of a ladie’s man. But since he’s a member of Fairy Tail, he just has to have something that’s “unique”, other than his magic. For him, he has moments where, unconsciously, strips out of some of his clothing.

user uploaded image

One cool thing about Gray though is that he hardly ever loses twice to someone he has fought against before. What do I mean? Well, during an arc of the show, Gray will face off against one of the main villains and will straight up lose that fight. But, he then gets a chance to face that person again. Only this time, he will be the one that’s still standing by the end of the fight. I really like this, because it’s like sending a message that’s saying, “if you lose, don’t give up. Just get back up, think about how you could’ve done it differently, get stronger, and then try again.”

Now for Gray’s magic, he is an ice wizard. Well, more precisely, he’s an ice crafting wizard. That means, with his ice magic, he can craft almost anything. He can make a cannon, a drill, a sword, and so much more. And that’s why his magic has been dubbed as “Ice-Make”. If his magic isn’t capable of freezing you like a popsicle, then he’ll just craft himself a tool to use in his fight against you. Oh, and you do not want to get on his bad side.

user uploaded image

Anyway, for his deck of choice, I decided to give him…

Ice Barrier

user uploaded image

(We really need to get some more ice-like archetypes that can really stand out in today’s game.) I mean, come on, why not? The Ice Barriers are the masters of ice. They love the cold. And they have access to some very powerful Synchro Monsters. Including the all mighty, the ever powerful, Trishula!

And we all know how powerful Trishula is in both the game and in the Duel Terminal lore. This dragon single handedly froze the entire Duel Terminal world for who knows how long. While Gray is not capable of doing something like that, what he can do is, if it comes down to it, give up his entire existence in order to in-case someone, or something, in a pillar of ice for all eternity. So yeah, I think Ice Barriers fit perfectly with Gray.

Erza Scarlet

user uploaded image

Now here is someone you really, really don’t want to piss off. Erza is one of Fairy Tail’s strongest wizards of all time. She is a one man army. She can take over 1,000 grunts and/or monsters and wipe them all out without any back-up. And she has incredible fatigue in the heart of battle. Like, she could be a bit exhausted and still have enough strength to fend off a huge attack. Say, for example, she could annihilate the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, despite being very low on magic and stamina. That’s why she earned the rank of S-Class wizard (which means you are one the strongest wizards the guild has).

As for her magic, she has a very unique magic called “Requip”, which allows her to access some type of void-like area that houses over 100 unique armors and weapons. Each of those armors and weapons have special abilities that can help Erza in, just about, any situation. For example, if she fights against a fire wizard, say like Natsu, she has a suit of armor that can reduce flame attacks by 50%. And no one else has access to this but her. While she has all of this different gear for many different situations, her favorite armor is the “Clear Heart Clothing”.

This armor has no special ability. Instead, it’s just her being like a samurai, where she focuses on offense over defense.

With all of this information, I believe her ideal deck would be…

Sky Striker

user uploaded image

This archetype is all about one girl that can open “special gates” that can let her access the different “Sky Striker Ace” modes that are perfect for many different types of battles. Not to mention, this deck was one of the best decks in the game, leading from late 2018 to the beginning of 2020. A top tier meta deck is just perfect for Erza, considering how she is an S-Class wizard, which you could say would be equivalent to the term “meta” in Yu-Gi-Oh! standards.

And again, Erza has access to so many different armors that’s perfect for each battle, so how could Sky Striker not be the perfect fit for her? Plus, just look at Sky Striker Ace – Kagari and tell me it doesn’t look like the perfect, alternative version of Erza’s Clear Heart Clothing form.

Wendy Marvell

user uploaded image

Wendy here is a shy and very polite young girl. She is so nice, and can get along with a lot of different people. Heck, with her strong determination, if you turned evil, she can probably win you back simply by having a chat with you. This is not to say she can’t fight. She can, but prefers not to, if she can. And you may not fare well against her. Not because she’s a member of Fairy Tail, but because she’s also a Dragon Slayer!

user uploaded image

Her magic is called “Sky Dragon Slayer Magic”. In other words, she uses a type of wind magic. While her magic does have some offenses, one of her main specialties with this type of magic is to provide support. Meaning, if you get hurt in battle, she can have you all healed up. And if you need to get in some extra damage on your opponent, she can enhance your magic abilities for a bit. Oh, and if you were to have some type of illness, say like motion sickness or sea sickness, she can make you temporarily immune to it.

Basically, she’s the team member that will play the role of support/defense. Again though, she does have spells that can be used for offense. I mean, she is a Dragon Slayer, and I don’t know about you, but I think a dragon would want to know some powerful attack spells. As they say sometimes, “offense is the best defense.”

With all of this information, I believe Wendy’s deck of choice shall be…

Windwitch

user uploaded image

Okay, I know this archetype isn’t all about playing support, but they kind of do. At least, for the Synchro Monsters they summon out. There’s one that prevents the monster from being destroyed by card effects, and one that prevents it from being destroyed in battle. Where everything differentiates though is the fact that some of the Windwitch monsters like to do a bit of burn damage, which is not exactly what Wendy is all about. But still, there’s not really a whole of Wind archetypes that focuses a lot on support.

Still though, I feel that Windwitch is perfect for Wendy since they can go into Wind based Synchro Monster. Including the mighty Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon. And for the record, this dragon is hinted to be a female, so again, I think Windwitch will fit Wendy very well.

Gajeel Redfox

user uploaded image

Gajeel is a bit of a hard-headed person. (Literally.) He can seem quite ruthless, and is just simply waiting to pick a fight with someone, which he does enjoy, due to his short-temper, but he’s a very nice and dependable guy when it comes down to it. Whatever guild he’s a part of, he will do his best to help and support his guild. And after joining Fairy Tail, he started to be more caring for his fellow guild members. (And if he asks you if you want to listen to his music, don’t accept the offer.)

As for his magic, Gajeel is also another Dragon Slayer. For his magic, it’s called “Iron Dragon Slayer Magic”. Meaning, his magic revolves around iron. And that’s some pretty heavy stuff already. Being hit with something made of iron is one thing, but if you get hit by a dragon-like attack that’s also made of iron, you better have reserved a spot for your burial once your funeral has come to an end. Gajeel’s magic not only lets him turn parts of his body into any steel-like weapon, but he can completely transform his skin into iron, making it hard to leave a scratch on him. And of course, since he is a Dragon Slayer, that means he can literally eat anything made of iron!

user uploaded image

Yeah, I’m not messing with that guy either. Anyway, for Gajeel’s deck, I believe his deck of choice would be…

Scrap

user uploaded image

I mean, it makes sense. Dude is all about the iron based stuff. And he can literally eat pieces of scrap for breakfast. The Scrap archetype is also all about destroying either themselves or one of their other members in order to trigger their effects and summon out more of their companions. That’s something Gajeel wouldn’t mind so much since he’s not always a team member, but will still work with his guild members if he has to.

Not to mention, the Scrap archetype has good access to a couple of monsters that are also Dragon monsters. Seriously! Come on! A Dragon made out of scrap! If that’s not a perfect fit for Gajeel, then I obviously don’t know my Fairy Tail characters that well.

Laxus Dreyar

user uploaded image

Laxus here is a bit of an odd one. In the past, he was quite a jerk to everyone in his guild, either mocking how weak some of the guild members were, or would only offer his aid to one of his guild members if they gave him something in return for his service. But after one eventful arc, his attitude completely changed. He had a change of heart and became more caring to his guild members.

Now this is not to say he never cared about Fairy Tail. He always cared about it. He would even knock you out if you bad mouth anything about his guild. It’s just that he wanted to get rid of those he deemed to be weak in order to make the Fairy Tail guild even stronger. But again, after one arc event, he started to care more for his fellow guild members. Also, he is a tough guy to beat. So tough that he also became an S-Class wizard within the Fairy Tail guild. What makes him so tough though? I’m glad you asked.

Laxus’ magic is lightning based. Thanks to it, he can not only create lightning strikes from just about anywhere, but he can also engulf himself in lightning to increase his speed to either evade attacks, or get up close with his opponents. But again, he can launch lighting strikes from anywhere! Whether it’s up close or from a distance. There’s just so many different things he can use his lightning magic for.

And if that wasn’t enough, he’s also a Dragon Slayer to top it all off. Well, kind of. He’s what’s known as a “second generation” Dragon Slayer. The difference between him and first gens, like Natsu, Gajeel and Wendy, is that instead of being taught this type of magic by a dragon, he acquired it through the use of a Dragon Lacrima – a rare item that gives individuals artificial dragon magic when implanted. Despite how he acquired this type of magic, it’s still a type of dragon slaying magic, so it can work against other dragons.

With that important little piece of the puzzle, his deck of choice should obviously be…

Thunder Dragon

user uploaded image

Wouldn’t you agree? After all, this archetype is called “Thunder Dragon” despite not being actual dragons. This kind of fits Laxus since he possesses Dragon Slaying magic, despite not having it be taught to him by a dragon. So in a way, he’s kind of not an actual dragon, which fits together with this archetype very well. Also, Thunder Dragons was one of the best decks in the same era in time when Sky Stickers was one of the best meta decks. And given how Laxus is an S-Class wizard, that’s even better.

And that concludes this round of “If They Played Yu-Gi-Oh!” Happy, late, birthday again to my friend! Hope you enjoyed your gift! And to everyone else that’s reading this: don’t go thinking I will take in suggestions. I’m a busy man, and have other plans in the works, currently. Only did this because, again, it was my friend’s birthday. Plus, I prefer doing my own thing, seeing as how you guys like to make some crazy requests at times.

Anyway, let me know in the comments what you thought about this! Do you agree with my deck choices for each of the characters I mentioned? Do you think there’s one that would suit them better? I would love to hear your thoughts!
